DRI in the News

January, 2007 -
Portland, Oregon is one of two test markets that R. J. Reynolds is using for snus (pronounced "snoose"), tobacco-filled pouches designed to be easy to use, primarily because unlike typical chewing tobacco, snus users to not have to spit out the juices. The other test market is Austin, Texas.

Because it's more discrete than chewing tobacco, and is available in flavors such as spice and frost that make it smell like candy and taste like gum, some public officials see the product as another attempt by Big Tobacco to capture not just adult tobacco users, but adolescents.

Herb Severson, DRI President and Director of Research, was asked to comment on snus for an article by Andy Dworkin of The Oregonian, which appeared in the newspaper on Sunday, January 7, 2007 and an editorial that appeared in the Tuesday, January 9th paper.
