Responsible Beverage Service Training
|
| |
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a leading cause of developmental disability in the Western world, and is entirely preventable. Still, 20% of women who drink, continue to do so during pregnancy. Efforts at prevention have failed to access many high-risk women in time to intervene effectively.
A venue frequently visited by drinking pregnant women is the public drinking establishment. Much damage can be prevented by intervention in the second and third trimesters when pregnancy is ordinarily visible to alcohol service personnel.

 |
Ongoing social relationships between bar staff and customers also provide opportunities for transmission of prevention information towomen early in pregnancy, before pregnancy is visible.
We have designed an interactive, Web-based alcohol server training program that addresses standard Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training topics such as ID checking to avoid service to minors, caluclating Blood Alcohol Content, recognizing visible signs of intoxication, and methods of preventing DUI. |
| |
| |
Our program will include these standard elements, plus extensive training in FAS prevention designed to provide alcohol servers and their managers with information about the medical effects of alcohol on a developing fetus, the legal ramifications of serving or not serving alcohol to a pregnant woman, and powerful video models of tehniques for refusing alcohol service to women who are pregnant.

The program will be evaluated with approximately 600 bar owners, managers and alcohol servers using a pre- and post- design to assess the impact of the program and collect both process and outcome data.
